A « Mini-RIAD » for a new mission in West Africa

Saturday, 11 June 2011, was a special day for the broader Assumption community in Sokode (Togo), including the Sisters of the Assumption, the Orantes of the Assumption and the Augustinians of the Assumption, together with the lay collaborators of our different apostolates. Approximately forty participants spent some intense moments of reflection, conversation and fraternity.

Assumption renewed in Bucharest

On Monday, January 17th – a significant date for it was the vigil of the week of pray for Christian unity – the official inauguration of the new Assumptionist home in Bucharest took place. The building houses a Center that wants to be at the service of Church unity and is placed under the patronage of the two apostles, Peter, “Coryphee”, and Andrew, the First-called, emblematic figures for the Churches of the West and of the East.

Like a simple family reunion

The bicentennial celebrations of Father Emmanuel d’Alzon’s birth at Nîmes, at Lavagnac, and at Le Vigan were like a simple family reunion, one of those get-togethers that are prepared long in advance and that make people so happy to gather around the family’s eldest member. Each participant felt close to him, whether visiting the museum recently inaugurated in Nîmes, near the tomb in the school’s chapel, or in the ancestral home at Lavagnac, or in the charming small town of Montagnac (Hérault).

Assumption’s Charism

balincourt.jpg
Sr. Thérèse-Agnès de Balincourt

A meeting was held in Rome on January 5-9, 2009 on the theme: The Charism of Assumption. There were about twenty participants and interpreters from all continents from the five congregations commonly called the “Assumption Family.”  They met to exchange ideas on the “human and spiritual experience at the heart of Assumption’s charism.”
We asked Sister Thérèse Agnès de Balincourt, Religious of the Assumption, presently in Philadelphia (USA), what struck her about this meeting.

-    Sister Thérèse Agnès, what is your assessment of this meeting?

-    “For me, it was very positive.  Besides acquiring a better understanding of our respective charisms, we experienced the family spirit which has been present from the very beginning and which is becoming more and more tangible” [Colloquium on the Origins of the Assumption Family, Paris 2004, English edition Rome 2007, 484 pages].  “We experienced respect, mutual esteem, and the desire to be an integral part of Assumption.  The liturgy gathered and nourished us, together, and the setting of the new Assumptionist chapel in Rome was nourishment in itself.”

-    What do you think are the essential characteristics of the charism of the Assumption Family?

THE ASSUMPTION CHARISM

Inter-Assumption Workshop 6-9 January 2009
Rome

Nineteen of us, from the five families of the Assumption have just met in the Assumptionist Generalate in Rome for a workshop on our shared charism. This initiative of the General Councils of the family took place exactly five years after the Colloquium on the Origins of our Assumption Family which inspired it. We met with the twofold aim of clarifying the particular gift we bring to the Church and of deepening our unity. Our method was to share our understanding of the spiritual experience of our founders and our own lived experience of the charism, while at the same time building communion among us by common prayer, moments of recreation, by visiting Rome together “in the footsteps of Fr. D’Alzon” and by an unforgettable celebration of the Eucharist in the crypt of St Peter’s. It was a rich and very enjoyable experience.
