News from the Assumptionists in Chile
Written by Administrator

"At 3:05 this morning an earthquake struck. There are deaths; the number is unknown.
I have no news at this time of Concepción, Cauquenes, Chillán (near the epicenter). Historic Talca is in ruins. There is a lot of damage in Santiago. Once again stained glass windows have fallen in our basilica. There are large cracks in the structure of there building itself.
Bridges have fallen. There is word that the church in Providencia has been razed.
None of the religious here has been hurt. We are fine, but haven't had much sleep since the whole house was shaken. Things have fallen everywhere and not a book remains on the shelves, at least wherever I have looked.
I just got outside during a strong aftershock.
Our house has sustained enormous damage.
All we can do is pray.
We will have to raise funds to help others and ourselves.
Electricity just returned. That's why I am writing. We can't contact our religious in the south (N.B. Lota is about 100 miles south of the epicenter)."

At its February 2009 meeting, the Help Committee or the government of Asia” formed a project to meet several days the Assumptionist religious that live in our Asian communities. The basic objective of such a meeting was a better mutual knowledge of the religious living in our different mission territories, in Korea, the Philippines, and Vietnam. This meeting would also permit an evaluation of the foundations, of their insertion in the reality of these three countries, as well as a sharing of apostolic projects and a possible collaboration among the communities.

This project was begun and became concrete through a Forum, held at Antipolo, in the Manila neighborhood during last 22 to 24 January. The following attended:
- for the Philippines: five native religious and six “missionary “ religious serving in this country;
- for Vietnam: six religious, representing the three communities actually active in the country;
- for Korea: a native religious and two n team.
Present also were three members of the “Asian: Commission who don’t live in this continent and two volunteers presently serving in the Philippine mission.

ASSUMPTIONISTS IN PARISHES - Handbook
Written by Richard E. Lamoureux a.a.

In the history of the Congregation, little has been said about the work of Assumptionists in parishes. Some of what has been said has not been very helpful. The absence of any substantial reflection on parochial ministry in the Congregation is especially unfortunate now when so many religious are engaged in this mission. In one sense, the Congregation has not taken this work seriously. But in another sense, it should be said that the Congregation has not invested more, in terms of man-power, in any other work.
