The Council of the Congregation which met at Helvoirt (Netherlands) in May 2006 created the International Lay/Religious Commission requested by the General Chapter (#111 and #104) in May 2005. That Commission is composed of five lay persons and two religious who represent the various cultural components of the Assumptionist Congregation ( Africa, North America, South America, Europe, and eventually Asia).
Its members are : Ms. Marie-Pierre GIRARD (France), Ms. Jimena GARCIA (Chile), Mr. Joseph PAGANO (U.S.A.), Mr. Pierre RION (Belgium), and someone from Africa still to be designated, Fathers Noël LE BOUSSE (France) and Julio NAVARRO (Rome). Their term of office lasts until The Council of the Congregation 2009.
The Commission’s objectives are as follows : to ensure animation throughout the Congregation and follow up of actions proposed by the General Chapter regarding the lay/religious covenant ; to ensure ongoing dissemination of information and significant events in that area ; to make better known to lay persons the spirituality of the Assumption and the Augustinian and Alzonian charisms ; to encourage closeness between religious communities and lay groups for missions taken on together with religious. (See Acts of the Chapter # 101 to # 117). The Council of the Congregation has reminded each Province of its responsibility to animate, energize and develop the lay/religious covenant. Accordingly, each Province or country must designate a lay/religious “couple” which will become the “transmission belt” between the International Commission and the various groups of laity, whether already in existence or to be born.
