Close to a hundred people gathered around the tomb of Fr. Emmanuel d’Alzon on the morning of 21 November, the 125th anniversary of Fr. d’Alzon’s death.  Mass was presided by Fr. Richard Lamoureux, Superior General, who concelebrated with some twenty-five Assumptionists and priest friends, including the Episcopal Vicar of the Diocese of Nîmes, Fr. Bernard Fougères, members of the General Council and religious from communities in Nîmes and nearby Montpellier.  In addition to the Assumptionists, the other four Congregations of the Assumption family were represented:  the Oblate sisters (also founded by Fr. d’Alzon), the Religious of the Assumption, the Little Sisters, and the Orantes.  A good number of lay friends joined in the celebration.  After Mass in the chapel of the Oblate Sisters, all gathered for lunch at the Diocesan Center.

This 125th anniversary of the founder’s death was also the occasion to celebrate the publication of two new books.  The first, yet another by the Congregation’s archivist, Fr. Jean-Paul Périer Muzet, is entitled “Le P. d’Alzon au jour le jour”, a collection of 365 brief texts from Fr. d’Alzon for reflection and meditation on each day of the year.  The second is the Acts of the Assumption Family History Colloquium held in 2004, entitled “L’Assomption, ses origines”.

The papers published in the Acts were delivered at a gathering of approximately one hundred Assumption brothers and sisters who met for a week in January of 2004 to reflect on the common history of the five Congregations and especially to clarify some of the controversial moments during that history.  (These volumes are available by contacting the Secretariat at the General House in Rome:  This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it   They will be distributed automatically to all Assumptionist communities.)
