This news item comes after a day of interruption! Sunday gave our group a breather. Thanks to Julio Navarro, the appointed organizer of leisure moments before the Eternal One, we were given a day to go in search of Etruscan civilization. The Etruscans were a people of uncertain origin who put their stamp on a part of Italy before the domination of the Latins. We visited Tarquinia about 90 kilometers from Rome under brilliant sunshine, exploring well-colored frescoed tombs as well as the museum which contains many artifacts of that civilization. A break spent at an inn allowed us to savor Italian cuisine, both simple and nourishing.
The day before, the Council had taken up many issues. The care of vocations gave rise to a wealth of contributions from small linguistic groups and though certain countries are experiencing famine, others are thriving on rich fare. However, there is a common concern for this vital issue. The economic chapter returned to the saddle. One of us dreams that we should further carry on our reflection of this topic in order to better face the future: “how to get more money into the common fund?” The discussion allowed us to realize that in each of our provinces we must take good care of the goods we have. Another group took up the topic of “community organization.” As a matter of fact there needs to be reflection on adapting our structures to fit the evolution of the Congregation. Our awareness of international solidarity is going to be built up by reflecting on this theme, just as it will be with our desire to send religious of various provinces already well organized in order to discover our “Mission to the East,” which is a common heritage.
Finally, the issue of “Justice and Peace” is ingrained in our minds. The members of our group fluctuate between feelings of having advanced or of slipping backwards according to the discussions and the difficulty of making clear ideas spring up. However, there is a will to arrive at better marking our commitment to solidarity, and perhaps to bring forth a common initiative. Why not, in order to mark the bicentennial of the birth of Father Emmanuel d’Alzon? Something to follow up on!
