Rev. George Tavard, A.A.
George Henri Tavard was born in Nancy, France on February 6, 1922. He made profession on December 27, 1943 and was ordained on March 2, 1947.
He obtained a doctorate in theology (DSL) from the Université Catholique de Lyon in 1949 and was honored with many honorary doctorates. After spending a few years in England, he came to the USA in 1952 in order to put his love for Church unity to greater use. He has been here ever since.
Fr. Tavard was a peritus at the Second Vatican Council, serving especially with the Protestant delegation. He held several teaching positions at American and international universities and seminaries, most notably at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio and Marquette University in Milwaukee.
Fr. Tavard authored over 60 books and numerous articles on a wide variety of theological and spiritual topics, concentrating mostly on ecumenical subjects. Until his death he remained busy writing and lecturing.
Fr. George had active membership in a number of important ecumenical associations, among them, the Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission in the USA, Lutherans and Catholics in Dialogue in the USA, and the Joint Commission between the Roman Catholic Church and the World Methodist Council. He was frequently called upon by the Vatican for these and other services.
Fr. George died suddenly at Orly Airport in Paris on August 13, 2007. Funeral services and burial will be in Paris. A memorial service is being planned in the USA at a later date.
Besides his Assumptionist brothers, Fr. Tavard leaves a sister, Anne Marie Rossetti and a brother, Jean-Marie, as well as a niece, Alvira.
