Fr. George Tavard dies suddenly in Paris |

Rev. George Tavard, A.A.
George Henri Tavard was born in Nancy, France on February 6, 1922. He made
profession on December 27, 1943 and was ordained on March 2, 1947.
He
obtained a doctorate in theology (DSL) from the Université Catholique de Lyon in
1949 and was honored with many honorary doctorates. After spending a few years
in England, he came to the USA in 1952 in order to put his love for Church unity
to greater use. He has been here ever since.
Fr. Tavard was a peritus at
the Second Vatican Council, serving especially with the Protestant delegation.
He held several teaching positions at American and international universities
and seminaries, most notably at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio and
Marquette University in Milwaukee.
Fr. Tavard authored over 60 books and numerous articles on a wide variety of
theological and spiritual topics, concentrating mostly on ecumenical subjects.
Until his death he remained busy writing and lecturing.
Fr. George had
active membership in a number of important ecumenical associations, among them,
the Anglican-Roman Catholic Commission in the USA, Lutherans and Catholics in
Dialogue in the USA, and the Joint Commission between the Roman Catholic Church
and the World Methodist Council. He was frequently called upon by the Vatican
for these and other services.
Fr. George died suddenly at Orly Airport in
Paris on August 13, 2007. Funeral services and burial will be in Paris. A
memorial service is being planned in the USA at a later date.
Besides his
Assumptionist brothers, Fr. Tavard leaves a sister, Anne Marie Rossetti and a
brother, Jean-Marie, as well as a niece, Alvira.
