Visit of the Archbishop of Kwangju and his Auxiliary
Today, Friday, in light of what the Provinces have said, the assembly chose “Community Life” as its theme.
A few inescapable aspects were touched upon:
- First, the importance of the Local Chapter! The Local Chapter is a real occasion for sharing in which – in all truthfulness – the community draws up its “charter.” It is a real occasion for sharing.
- The community is a reality of Faith.
Fr Joseph Baik Ho introducing himself to the bishops
- Knowing how to be very natural and to rise above the level of simply
being “good buddies,” conscious of the fact that differences are not
obstacles to living together. Each one has natural qualities and can
count on the grace of God. Father d’Alzon insisted a lot on this.
- Community sharing allows for the exchange of rich experiences from which each individual can profit.
It should not be forgotten that the common life is based on what is
actually being lived … which is much more than mere atmosphere and
amiability.
Bishop Kim Hygino, Archbishop Youn Victorino, and
Archbishop Choi Andreas
The day ended on an interesting note appreciated by everyone: an opportunity to express our communion with the Local Church.
The sun was still shining at 5 PM, on this Friday, April 4, when we
received His Excellency Andreas CHOI, Archbishop of Kwangju, his
auxiliary Bishop Hygino KIM, and Archbishop Emeritus Victorino YOUN who
had received us in Korea at Christmas 1991. In the Assumptionist
tradition, we wanted to express our communion with the Local Church.
The effort was successful.
Homily of the Archbishop of Kwangju translated by Fr. Frans Desmet
Fr Richard with Archbishop Choi Andreas
Archbishop YOUN presided the Eucharist, and Archbishop CHOI gave the
homily which was simultaneously translated by Father Frans Desmet. The
archbishop had obviously read and thoroughly studied the documents the
community had given him. Basing himself on the new impetus the Church
received at Vatican II, he developed the theme: prepare for the future
by respecting present realities. His conclusion reminded us once again
that: “Our aim is very clear: communion with God the Father; we know
the way: Christ Jesus; and we have a good compass: the Holy Spirit.”
Both the supper, offered by the archbishop, and the evening were lively
and relaxed. He himself served as the wine waiter. Quite obviously,
there were no rigid and awkward manners, and the bishops themselves
discovered another dimension of the Assumptionists.
