The Province of Africa is big and vocations are numerous.  Vincent and Ephrem accepted to take questions again from our assembly.

We reacted to the talk given by Luc Martel about the Office of Development and Solidarity.  We have come to realize that the success of this undertaking depends on at least two things: the work and contacts of Luc, and good collaboration on the part of the provinces.  Likewise, we think it is important for Luc to have assistants in the provinces, and it is suggested that this be entrusted to the provincial treasurers.  No matter what, raising money demands time, a lot of time, and it obliges us to give a lot of thought to the way in which we are going to use the money in harmony with our apostolic mission.  We can’t forget that what we receive from organizations and benefactors or from the work of the religious doesn’t belong solely to us.  It’s there so that we can exercise our solidarity with the poor and the disadvantaged.

We also took up again the ten proposals made by Dr. Cesareo regarding the Assumptionist university in Worcester.  The proposals will be re-discussed in small groups.

In the afternoon, Mr. Antoine Paoli, director of the Baume Center, spoke to us about the center’s history and plans.  La Baume is the only Jesuit cultural center in France.  It focuses on three main areas of activity: theological, spiritual and cultural.  The Jesuit community here at the Center assures its overall animation with a team of salaried laypeople.  For the last thirty years, the Center has existed in this way, but the need to develop La Baume in new directions is becoming more urgent.

In general assembly, we reviewed various questions: the location of a memorial in Nîmes (especially from the point-of-view of its financing); youth ministry; the project of receiving young people in Rome; the postulation.

As you can well imagine, we have no time to lose, and we must foresee time for discussions.  Also, the texts must now be drawn up so they can be voted on.  To do that, time is allotted to the teams designated for this purpose.  We must recognize that the heaviest task falls on the shoulders of the committee in charge of finances.

The Eucharist, presided by the Provincial of France, included time for meditation and prayer.  In this way, each brother who asked questions of his provincial confrere is invited to pray especially for him and for his province.
